As rain continues to rain I shall continue to bring you narce pickies of Jerri....

Mah Castle.... There may be a query as to whether this is actually mahn...I'd argue it's in Grouville and others might wrongly, in my view, think its in St Martin. In the meantime it remains  Mahn!

Crimbo time

Greetings.

It's begining to feel a lot like....yeah yeah we know!
Not a lot happening right now....especially as its half eight at night, dark and ruddy cold!, and whilst interweb surfin' fell upon allotment-diary.co.uk  http://www.allotment-diary.co.uk/ BRILLIANT! How anything can be grown Up North is amazing....no I'm only joking! I'm totally inspired to grow show onions but don't have  a poly tunnel....yet! Then again our sub tropical climate here in Jersey may lend itself to outside growing.
Also Dan's site makes my poor offering....well..... poor! I'll see if I can Jazz it up a bit for next year.
It's great having pics and vids to look at. I'll have to do better to make the ol' ramblings more interesting.
Oh...here you go. Elizabeth Castle! Nice one.

Strangeness

Greetings
Just to give you an idea  of what's on my mind........Wintergreen - tastes like root beer and peppermint, Callaloo - tastes like spinach, broccoli and watercress, Electric Dasies - tastes like fizzy sherbert and 9 volt batteries! and Cucamelons - tastes like cucumber and citrus.

Wierd or what? and they all look fantastic too. I'm also doing different usual things if you get what I mean...yellow beans, multi coloured carrots and the like. The Plot is going to look like  a rainbow!
Can you tell how excited I am?

Half dug

Greetings.
Sorry Reader that it's been a while but generally it has been persisting down and not very pleasant at all. But today it's been fine so I was out early and now I am half dug!
My well rotted manure pile ....absolutely full of worms... is now all over my rhubarb with plenty to spare for the unmanured side of the plot which I'm getting to.
The onions are doing nicely and haven't been drowned yet. All in all doing OK and looking good.

Picking out seeds for next season...going to go wacky! Watch this space!

Keep on keeping on!

Gobsmacked

Greetings!
My garden never ceases to amaze. I thought I'd  had everything but as I was clearing the greenhouse out I found not one but two cucumbers hiding at the back! Brilliant.  Also yet a few more tomatoes ...with one plant left still producing. And.....another pumpkin amongst the foliage. And ...despite all the rain a rasberry too!

Diggin has started! I'm doin the manured side of last year....and what a joy. The earth is easy to dig and turn and with few weeds to get rid of. I'm about 1/3 of the way through...just need some more time...and less rain.

Seed catalogue arrived....decisions decisions....fancy beans methinks and all things odd! I have a feeling that next season is going to be  a cracker. Having said that it's already started 'cos my onions are already showing! Deffo going to sow lots of icebergs too as we use them on the Van..... as well as toms and cucumbers. Gonna need a bigger greenhouse.

Keep diggin!

Stoptober

Greetings

So much to do but at the moment little inclination!
It's been Rally weekend here with many thrills and spills due to ever changing weather. On Saturday whilst marshalling we saw a full on Tornado! Amazingly rare in Jersey. And the storm cloud had two others which didn't form fully.Steve and Eve crashed out this year which was a little disappointing. Thankfully unharmed and the car not too bad.
Next weekend is free so weather dependant I will be digging digging digging!

Light sledding

Greetings

From the sublime to the ridiculous.....the weather has turned...again! Rain and wind and just plain nasty!

As for the Plot...sadly neglected ....although I have planted lots of onions! Oh I've already told you that....it's precipitating again!.....quite bloomin heavily!!!

Had a bit of a gardening accident the other day...I was mowing the lawn when I turned into  my Yucca tree which poked me in the eye. Luckilly I flinched quickly and the spike only just knicked the white but it went all red. It doesn't hurt and the red is fading. Whew!!

Gardening ...it's a dangerous passtime!

Well...it's nearly the weekend and hopefully the sun will come out for long enough for me to do a bit of digging and muck spreading. Joy!

Onions

Greetings!

Wow. What a fabby day!. It's been like Summer here. And today has been just  great.
300 Onions in! Radar Troy and Electric. Ones for over winter and early Summer harvest.
Just wish I could have spent a few more hours out there but work calls. Oh and I got a final couple of courgettes and a few more toms.

I have a huge weed pile which I'm going to turn into a big bonfire on Nov 5th and celebrate not only the saving of Parliament, King and Country hurrah! but also a wonderful first season on the Plot.

Some trials and tribulations but also some wonderful successes and overall a great and satisfying year.

I hope you all have had a good one too!

Now it's digging time............

Late Summerness

Greetings
As I said....diggin! Been diggin. First 10'...maybe 15' done and dressed with a fine layer of the well rotted stuff!

Onions are the future. Profound I know but it's the truth. I'm gonna plant me several 100 over Wintering variety ones 'cos the 100 I put in this season are nearly all gone. Cri! They're dirt cheap and easy to grow and it's what we use...a lot.

Officially fed up of runner beans....I mean what is the point? Gonna grow me some yella and red and purpl ones. Much more fun.

Just done me  a vegetable stew with homegrown courgettes, tomatoes, garlic and onions. Ratatouillie by any other name.  Yum....I hope.

Seeds....gotta start choosing what I'm going to plant for next year. Any suggestions or ideas?

This year has been great....I just know that's it just going to get better and better.

Keep on enjoying!

Busy Boy!

Greetings.

Well aren't we having an Indian Summer? It's bloomin lovely and I've been busy enhancing the plot.  I've now placed my water butt on three pallets ( I love pallets) to give it a bit of oomph when it comes to watering next year. I've now just got to sort filling it!. I need to source some pipe and bits to ensure I get all the water from the shed roof. No more filling little plastic bottles! Yeehah!!

Still getting a few toms and courgettes and one more pumpkin which I'm letting grow. We'll see how big she gets.

The rest of the Polt is quite bare now - just have to take down my beanpoles - and start digging again.

Keep enjoying!

A bit cloudy....

Greetings!

....today!

Well the season for me seems to be drawing to a close. The nights are becomming shorter (it's dark by half eight!) and the tentacles of Autum are touching the last of the Summer sun. The Plot has been quite magnificent with an abundance of great veg. I still have beans and courgettes and beets a plenty to take and one remaining pumpkin thats comming along nicely. In the greenhouse I'm just getting the last of my Toms. Chillies and peppers have been a bit poor ....oh well. I'll try again next year.

Unfortunately periods of neglect have allowed copious ammounts of weed to grow! Darn it! I've had a go at some but I have a coupple of hardy patches to sort. And I'll have to start digging the Plot again to make it all nice for winter and ready for a nice layer of vraic. Bi cri! And my manure heap has rotted down nicely. Not sure if another year of rotting is needed before spreading as the lot I put on green seems to have caused no harm.

So all in all a very good first year. I've got plenty of rhubarb and beans and courgettes in the freezer and I've still got onions and loads of garlic in the shed. I'll make me a gardner yet!

I have promised you some photos so I'm off out today to get some and to show you how the Plot fared.

Thanks for following my exploits. I plan to grow more exotic stuff next year so watch this space and although things will slow down (if not actually stop) over winter I'll be pottering about doing jobs and keeping you updated as to what I've bee up to. I'm going to overwinter some onions ( cos we use them lots) and we'll see about what else takes my fancy.

In the meantime keep on enjoying, keep on following and abitot for now.

More croppings

Greetings

Well if you have been following the Jet Stream then you will know that Summer has departed and we have returned to The Rainy Age....well ...unreliable sledding anyway. Hopefully someone will rearrange it again soon.

Meanwhile I'm taking reams of beans, gallons of courgettes, racks of rhubarb and streams of spinach.  lots of stuff!

My toms are rippening off so hopefully I will get  a decent crop.

I even saw a squirrel today. Hopefully he was eating someone elses stuff!

Burnin.....

Greetings!

Well at last the jet stream has moved and the Summer is really finally here. This week continues to be Hot Hot Hot.

Down on the Plot I continue to harvest spinach and rubarb and courgettes. Beans are begining to grow rampant and there will soon be a bean glut. My outdoor toms have been destroyed by blight and my indoor ones too which is killing me as they have produced a great crop. The fruits are just rotting on the vine.

I must say I am to blame as I havent been spending as much time as I'd like as I have been really busy with our Burger van down in St Ouen. ( Visit us at Hollyhock Caterers Jersey on Facebook) I am supplying my own onions for the van which I am very proud of !

Looking forward to going blackberrying as I think this year is going to produce a bumper crop.

Keep on keeping on!

Seemingly unnatural....

Greetings.

It appears that things have taken a turn....for the better....at last! It's beautiful today and so have been very busy on the Plot. I feel like Sir Galahad as I have fought the good fight against evil....weeds!. I now have a huge pile of them wilting away. I tidied up my strawberries and was rewarded with one remaining beauty. I then harvested all my onions which have done brilliantly and are now drying out in the shed.I'm now taking courgettes which are small and sweet. I dug up the rest of my Maris Pipers and got a big bagfull. A little disappointing - plenty of spuds but no real size. Finished the peas and now waiting on the beans. Spinach is ready and have taken some for tonight. Squashes are looking mighty fine but my toms have blight so I'm going to loose my outdoor ones. I just hope my greenhouse toms will be ok as I have lots of fruit. Hopefully this bit of sun will stay long enough to start ripening them off. Chillies and peppers not doing much yet and cucumbers are a washout. Glads doing well and even the Daliahs are begining to flower.

So all in all a brilliant day. Now I've got lots of patches to fill.....

Keep on enjoying

High Summer

Greetings!
Only joking......there is no bloomin Summer! Sorry to have been missing in action but I have been very busy with our new venture. We are the proud owners of a Catering buisness and we had our first weekend trading down St Ouen. Hollyhock Caterers available for Weddings, Birthdays and all other Events and Occasions.07797749119.  Probably the Best Burger Bar Bar None!

Meanwhile back on the Plot....things have gone MAD! In order ....Rhubarb cropping nicely, peas too, Maris Pipers - small but plentiful ( about 3 lb per plant). Beans - a little disappointing...taking their time to reach the top of their canes, beets comming along, carrots pretty reasonable...mildly surprised, garlick are good, shallots have been blown out, onions are doing nicely, turnips cropped.... about 15 lbs, other spuds....disaster. Squashes comming along as well as courgettes. Lettuce and spinnach looking good.  Outdoor toms growing up and I've just tied them up. Glads begining to flower but daliahs have a way to go. In the greenhouse toms are going bonkers and I'll hopefully have a great crop.  Chillies and peppers doing well all things considered.

Weeds! Hate em!

So we had our first dinner with all veg supplied by ME! Life's good.

On the bright side my toms are ....growing toms! Peas are almost ready too crop. Did I mention that I took 10 lbs of rhubarb? ...and made a rhubarb and custard cake? No? Oh well....
Carrots are looking good! No fly and fattening nicely.Broads going great as is almost everything.

I think spuds need a little more time as well as my turnips. Squashes and pumpkins are comming along and have produced little squashes etc so I'm hopeful on that front.

Out and aboutness

Greetings

Well the rain has stopped at last!  Got out and about and harvested a load of.....Turnips! Yep I'm long on turnips and can pay off a little of my debt to Ross.  My peas are doing great and I think I'm in for as great crop......together with beans beans beans and more beans. I feel I'm also going to be long on......beans! Oh and I've just put out my dwarf.....beans. Rhubarb is almost ready to take and my Maris .....well they do have a touch of blight but with only 2 weeks til optimum harvesting time I'm pretty hopeful.Carrots aren't looking too bad so fingers crossed on that front. Onions , shallots and garlic are doing fine as are all things squashy. The rest of the spuds though are rubbish....blight again.

Meanwhile in the greenhouse I've had a couple of lettuce. Hurrah! Toms are good and the ones Pete gave me have sets on and all are healthy and bright! Peppers are comming along as well as cucumbers.

Now then I'll have to start planning for later....must refer to my Bible and see what I should be doing.

D Day

Greetings

Well it was 68 years  ago yesterday that the begining of the end started. I will not dwell on History that has been well documented but only mention it as the weather is pretty much the same! D Day was put back a day due to the worst storms  in living memory and it's not that much different now. Rain and rain. I know it's good but really!....we want some sunshine. It's not too much to ask is it?

Took the Waarf up to the Plot yesterday and mightilly impressed  (yeah right!)  she was too. I'm quite pleased myself. Strawberries abound and mint grows wild. Just waiting now.......

Jolly Good Jaloppy!

Greetings.

Splendid holliday day today! Out on the Plot  weeding mostly but also harvesting some strawberries and some turnips. Put the courgettes out. Spuds are showing signs of blight so did a spray. Hopefully my Maris' will be ok but I don't hold out much hope for the rest. The Jaloppy was put to the test and helped shift three great piles of weeds followed by a bootfull of lawn cuttings and a wheelie bin ful of decaying garden waste. She nearly gave up the ghost on the last trip but nevertheless she managed to get me home. Good old girl! Steve's quarry was put to the test!

And all this after a pretty good afternoon mixing with the Common People at the Village day out. And of course nothing fails to shock when lo and behold a flash black limo pulls up at the new bus shelter..... and it gets opened by the Bailiff. Hahahahaha. That said it's the best looking bus shelter ever!

An overcast and windy day turned into a sunny and windy day but all said and done it was great and on the way home with various people in tow we had a few drinks with Pip and co and then all proceeded into ours with various pots and pans of stuff for an impromptu dinner party. Luckily I decided to retire fairly early as it continued into the wee small......

Narce sunny day again today. Rain forecast for tomorro tho.... we'll wait and see.

Yep we're all on holliday for our dear old Queen. 60 years on the throne - ouch that must hurt!

A couple of hours on the Plot in cloud a bit of rain and now glorious sunshine.  Put another two rows of beetroots in and finished digging the spuds. I've also put Carolynes daliahs in at last! Along the top by the greenhouse. They should look super.

Did a short course on chicken farming yesterday with Pip. Facinating. And Jenny has a brilliant smallholding with ...chickens(obviously) and sheep and ducks and pigs. Its beautifully kept and doing well. 40 ewes produced 100 lambs this year.  I'm green with envy. Field Farm in St Lawrence. Look her up on the interweb.

Off to the Village Bash now - all things wierd and wonderful and a little drinky or two ...for The Queen of course.

Strawberries! I am the proud producer of....several strawberries....well four actually! All gone now and very tasty.

It's generally been fairly nice all week and I have been doing the usual chores....H2Oing and the like. I have also been given a huge tray of beetroots by Pip some of which I've planted out. I reckon I'll have a field of them by the time I've planted out the rest. Thank the Lord cos I've got to pay my mate off for fixing my bike. He likes beetroot.

Tomatoes are begining to fruit.....very exciting. Rhubarb nearly ready for picking and the Maris' are flowering as are my raniculus' Turnips are doing fine too.

Apparently the whole of the World has sun today so obviously this is not news. I just don't care! It's SUNNY!

Been quite busy People. I've cut my bamboo - and crikey  - nearly didn't have enough...so many beans.  So all wigwammed up and already they are wrapping themselves around as we speak. Marvelous.  Bought me some Moneyspinner outdoor toms and I've got me some courgettes and some hot and sweet peppers and some cucumbers oh and some spinach. Yep it's all good and all my recent purchases were half price! and I got a huge ball of twine too! Have I mentioned the sun.....?

French Mist

Greetings!

Well it's French Misting again! Of course for those of you that don't already know it never rains in Sunny Jersey...but we occasionally get French Mist...ie the cloudy wet stuff that comes from France....no French Shalloteer Followers so I'm OK there! I know its good for Ducks and all but I want some real sun to make my spuds grow and not live in fear of Blight. Also it's not very nice being out in the wet. Strange but true.

Now then ...I bought myself a fandangled breadmaker the other day.....and I did what it said on the tin and yes it did produce a lump of bready looking rocky stuff. In fact it looked quite ugly...but despite its hideous looks I have been able to eat it...just. So success....to a certain degree. So today I decided to hand make a loaf to the same recepie. Well so far it looks great! It's currently resting whilst waiting to rise. But by being able to hand shape it it looks like it'll be a nice looking round shaped loaf. I'm getting all excited. I'm not very good at the waiting around bit though....grrrr.

Still angsting over The Jaloppy....she's becoming a liability....sorry old girl I know I'm not being very loyal but unless you sort yourself out you'll not be long for this world....shortly followed by Pip's trailer which seems to be on it's last legs too! So I'm in the market for new old reliable wheels....free if pos....hahahahah! Sorry I had to laugh on your behalf but hey the Jaloppy was free so there might be another kind soul out there who could help me out in exchange for veg! One lives in hope.

Despite the mist I'll have to pop up to the Plot to visit the greenhouse to do the watering still.

Greetings.

Just a very short post today as I'm working again this afternoon. The poo pile is officially full...so I have built a poo pile holder in the hoss field. Several pallets and sheets of ex garage ply and voila!
Disconcertingly on the way back the trailer was jumping about all over the place...doesn't seem long for this world. And The Jaloppy is playing up some....she only runs for 20 mins before needing a rest! It's quite nerve wracking wondering if a) you'll arrive at your destination b) whether she'll start again and c) whether she'll get you home! That's Shallotment motoring for you.

Mushroom Farm done! Now thrown behind the shed to be forgotton for quite a while. I hope my little spores will do their thing!  The other thing I was up to was bamboo cropping! My neighbout reckoned he spent £100 on bamboos...surely I misheard? Well I've been checking up and little canes are quite cheap but the big boys are much more expensive. And guess what ....I've got almost endless suplies of the big stuff. Product and production! I've already got a load cut and prepped but I need it for my beans first.
Weather is a bit iffy again which is now a bit worrying for my spuds - need dry and warm please. Toms are doing well and my hand me down lettuces are great!

Just the right witdth and length, freshly cut and not evergreen or poisonous! Just need to drill lots of holes in for the mushroom plugs. Loving it all!

I hope everyone has a lovely Bank Holliday week....I'll have a glass of vino or two and just hope everything survives until I get back.

Turnips!

Greetings.

Got out on Plot yesterday! Hooray. Managed to  plant toms which I received through the post. (Grafted)  Thinned out and transplanted dozens of turnip plants. Interesting as we don't eat turnips. Never mind. I'm sure we'll find a use for them. They seem to be thriving on my manure  mix.

A big rat hole/ run appeared from the bottom fence. I don't know if it's worth doing anything about as no doubt there'll be other members of the rat family about. Poison or not to poison that is the question.

Put more beans out - hopefully these ones won't die. Maris spuds looking good. Took advice to spray for blight from Chris. But no doubt I'll have to do it again soon as it hasn't stopped raining today. It's like bloomin Winter!

Had a good "free stuff" haul too. 60 slabs. Brill. And the builder,  Jerry, is my new best friend! Gonna give me wood and stuff left over hopefully. You never know when stuff'll be useful.

Me "breakfast spuds" (the ones I planted last year which got blight and produced dozens to tiny spuds) have chitted in  my cupboard. I'd totally forgotton about them. I'm gonna put them in and see what happens. I know they're small but who knows?

Pip confessed to leaving the mystery plants I found. They are raspberries. Hopefully they'll take.

We'll that's about it for this weekend. Another week of work and then I'm off on my holls for a week in France. I hope the sun comes out!

Keep on enjoying.

Update

Greetings

Well what a week - Boxwood sold out. Puts a few quid to lotment expences so I'm quite pleased with myself. Just need to do it another three times and the Plot is paid for the year. Gotta source more product. Wood...it doesn't grow on trees..oh...yes it does!

There's been a lot  of water this week and more forecast. Good! Been quite lucky this weekend though as it's been quite nice! Pip gave me a small bag of maincrop...alto something or othrers. Gone straight in. And he's given me some raspberries! Also on the plus side I've got me some butternut squashes ( from car boot) and a couple of pumpkins also from Pip again. And having given a trailer load of horse to Peter I got two plum tomato plants. Result all round.

Done yet more digging as  I've decided to dig up the central path...grass doesn't belong on an allotment!

Out on the plot things growing well especially the turnips. Gonna thin them out and replant. Strawberries are flowering and begining to set. Brill. The only other disappointment ( apart from the darn spuds) are my runners - put them out too early and they got burnt. Luckilly I've plenty more. My neighbours were putting theirs out  so I'll try again next week.

It's all good.  Catch you all later. (forgot the camera so pickies next week)

Week ending......

Greetings.

Well it's been a great week off I've just had. And it's finished off lovely. Warm and sunny. Done lots more chopping today and now we have four binfulls of kindling wood.  Just deciding how to package it. Been doing some more market research and down the Garage - part of a large chain in Jersey (say no more) - and it's £5.77 a bag. Crikey! So I think for the same amount  of wood I'm going to put a price of £3.00 on mine. Fair enough? Stop me and buy some!

On the Plot things are still coming along. I received a gift of something from someone. I think they're berries of some kind. I've put them in and we'll see.

I dug half my spuds and got about 10 lbs. Tragic!

Back to work tomorrow......

Keep on enjoying.....Abetot.

Grand Day

Greetings.

Well it's been an interesting day. Steve gave me a hand to collect some pallets but Steve's van became not very well and we had to use the Jaloppy. Good ole Jaloppy! The idea is to go into kindling wood production or as I like to call it Bob's Boxwood. You know...getting something for free and making a turn out of it using nothing but time and effort....oh yes that's it.....work.  And quite successful we are at it. After a somewhat basic start...using a hammer and nail bar we soon decided that Power tools are the best thing. With a bit of chopping and sawing and then a bit of hand axing (that's fun!) we managed to make a bin full. There's a bit of by product..all the bits with nails in but its a small price to pay. A bag full of boxwood is £3.80 in the shops and thats about three big double hands full!  I don't see me retiring on it but if I can make a few quid it'll go to the 'lotment expences and every littly helps to balance the books....which gives me an idea to keep a little black book of accounts. Watch this space! The afternoon came to a fairly abrupt halt when there was an enormous clap of thunder a flash of lightening and  a spot or two of rain but wierdly not that much.

Anyway it was an excuse to go home for the main event of today....The Grand National. The usual flurry of picking several horses with made up names and ten minutes of mad shouting....quite exciting really and our nag led from the start ....only to be overtaken two jumps from home. Darn it! Oh well...next year Rodney.

Looking forward to tomorrow to do some more chopping and to catch up on t'lotment.

Abetot for now as we say in Jerri.

Bobs new water butt....1000 lts...what a beauty!

and there's another in the pipeline...geddit?

I'm gonna give the spuds another week and then I'm gonna dig the lot up. They were not very good. I do blame myself though for reasons previously expressed. That said lookie what I dug up today...................................................................................................

Keep enjoying. Abetot.

Easter Sat

Easter Greetings.

Well it's been a fairly quiet week with the usual attendance for H2Oing. And we have a result! Oh yes as it's my Aniversaire on Monday I have received a Butt and I hope another will soon arrive. Immense joy  as soon I won't have to fill up the bottles anymore. Thank you Jane and Steve and Mark and Michelle.

In the meantime my Maris Pipers are peeping through and beetroot and some Raniculusses. On the downside critters are still munching away on my Broads and my Runners are looking unwell. But on the whole the rest are making up for it.

Here's the latest!

Happy Easter and Abetot!

Daily Grind

Greetings.

Well it's been a bit of a mixed weekend. I sorta caught a 24 hour cold on Saturday night and felt a bit off on Sunday but I did get down the Plot and built my runner bean goalpost net thing. So beans in and the sun came out and everything. There's talk of an official drought which means 15 days without rain....doesn't sound a lot but when you're watering by the 1.5 lt bottle I assure you it is!

That all said green things are still green - haven't been eaten by critters yet or killed off by anything else so I'm pretty pleased. Just need to sort out the longer term water problem.....and get some fertliser....and think of new things to sow....and prepare for the bee hive....and finish the fence.....

WEEKEND!

Greetings!

And Welcome to followers from the Emerald Isle.  We have connections going way back and my daughter is three quarters Irish. Work that one out and win a prize!

Quite a sore head this morning ....thanks Steve and Jane! And a change in the weather...overcast , cool and a bit misty. Poo and soil shovelling all done. A bit more digging done. Peas out with more on the way. Things comming along nicely.

Tomorrow I'm going to  erect my bean frame - not the traditional bamboo wigwam - but a goalpost and net affair. I'll take some more piccies for you to admire.

Keep on watching and  enjoy the joys of gardening.

Wednes ...yeah!

Greetings!
You know it. Yep OHfcially midweek. Yes INDEED and you know what?.....we have had over 300 views since I started this thing. Thank you so much for watching!

I can't beleive it - I only put some peas in not only the other day and they're up already...MAD!

Was at the Dunes earlier...Pip showed me his spuds...which I gave him from mine....and they're worse than mine! I'm kinda delighted as his were planted later and he also has peaty crumbly soil so it can't be wet or whatever but possibly just the spuds themselves. I've heard that West spuds won't go East and vice versa so maybe the myth is true.

It must be Summer Cos its so damn hot! Lovin it!

Tuesday 27 March 2012

Nearly midweek....

Greetings!
Watering and watering for Mon and Tues. Oh yes it's been very hot and the greenhouse is taking loads. I'd say I've doubled my literage which does not bode well as at the moment I'm shipping it in by the bottle which is very labour intensive. But rumours abound and hopefully I'm going to get lucky soon! Watch this space for news.

Pip on the other hand is having a nightmare with water too and he's got lots ....although I should say he had lots until it all ran away after a series of unfortunate events. First occasion he left a tap on and lost the lot and the next day his water bin had a hole in it! Poor Pip.

In the meantime its been pretty dry all round with not much rain so I'll be looking to plant a few palm trees and renaming the plot as The Dunes!

Musn't grumble.

Abetot for now as we Jerris say!

Sunday 25 March 2012

Wonderful Weekend!

Greetings Weekenders!
Well its been Absolutely Fabby! Sunniest March ever this w/e.Hot Hot Hot. The clocks have changed and it feels like Summer.
Been up to lots too. Maris Pipers are in..I hope they fare better than the Jersey lot. More beans in. Chillies are showing. Toms into bigger pots and ,save but a tiny sliver, I have finished digging the Plot! Yep I'm done. Thank the Lord as I don't think my left arm can take much more!

Now I can relax a bit and enjoy planting and sowing and watching my garden grow.

So here's the latest look......

and here's the weekends work........

Hope you all had a good one too!

Thurs....

Greetings !
New shenanigans going on on the Plot. No not really but I have some progress pics for you lucky people.... oh yes and some very exciting news!!!Yes INDEED.
Well we've seen inside the Shed so now it's time to take a lookie inside the Greenhouse.......you ready? Ok then....

Kindly note...shelves made by Steve. I've got his number if you need any carpentry etc doing or anything really he's very accomodating when not being grumpy. Now then the green things are beans and peas and the pots have leeks and spring onions. The other trays have my other stuff yet to grow in.

And here's the progress...if you can call it that.... on the rest of the Plot. Broad beans in and another sheet of fence in. You can just see my p poor spuds on the left although .........I accidentally dug one up and here it is..... SURPRISE! Yes Folks my first Spud! Not going to get rich am I?

Nearly the Weekend everybody. Sunshine predicted. Whoop!

Abetot.

Monday 19 March 2012

Mon.....

Greetings.

Welcome Cape Town! Yes we have hit the Southern Hemisphere. We are Global.

Yet another beautiful day and just a quick trip to the Plot to check up on things. It was quite a cold night last night so I was a little worried about frost on my spuds and newly planted out beans. But worry ye not ....all is well.

Pip gave me a bag of peas  as he "had too many" the other day. Pip man you're missing a trick....salad shoots. Plant them thickly in a pot and once  up  you've got salad ! Thanks to The Bible for this handy hint. Still a little bitter over my spuds...about a third are not showing.Pah! Rhubarb going great though.

We like peas and apart from spuds that is our staple vegtable and together with onions  thats all I really need. So I put another 100 peas in  to ensure a chance of a good crop. They'll be in the freezer faster than Bird's Eye!

Sunday Sunshine

Greetings.

Well well....what a weekend! Congratulations Wales and good job England.  And F1 season has started too.
Out on the Plot I've planted out my Broad Beans and there are signs of life in my recently planted seeds. Next week I'll put out my Runners. I've sown more peas and beans and have so many peas that I think I'll put the rest in just for salad shoots.

My onions are coming along and shallots and garlic are going well. A bit disappointing are my spuds. Only about a third have taken in the first planting.  I suspect too deep, too cold and too wet when I planted. You live and learn. I've taken the plastic off  to give them some air and sun and we'll just have to wait and see.

The little tomato plants are doing well in the greenhouse but I'm waiting for my chillies and peppers to show yet.   Got to start thinking about greens soon.

Thanks for supporting the Shallotment.

What is the point of Tuesday?

Greetings Fellow Followers of Outdoor Life!

Today was rather foggy. But not damp enough to extinguish my love of the 'lotment...Hell no. I'm looking out over my garden  at my freshly cut lawn and the daffs and camelias and at my brill climbing rose which is shooting all over and am feeling reasonably happy with it all.

I've almost forgotten that it's Tuesday!

Mid week tomorrow. I know I know......

Monday Blues

Greetings Everybody!

Only another four days.....and then it's the Weekend again! I know I'm wishing my life away and it's not all bad. Congratulations England. Nice win. Also I got the Jaloppy going. She was but only a little damp and with a little light revving she's going great again. I will never mention Landys again.

Every day things are changing. The runners have shot up overnight. Jane (Steve's wife) has been growing some stuff and now I've a little tray of toms and some lettuce. Lovely!
Now then it's time for a surprise........

This is a view from Pips Plot overlooking my Plot. That's my shed.
And this is the view towards our Castle which you can just see behind the tree in the middle of the picture.
The Jaloppy!

Pip and Cathy on their Plot - a fair amount of terracing going on there mate.

West side with carrots, turnips, beetroot, spring onions and rows of Raniculus' and the Rhubarb patch at the top.Lots of room for various beans and toms.
And East side with spuds under plastic.

And the Bottom End with Strawberries ( on banks) Garlic, Shallots and Onions. I wish I'd taken "Before" pictures as this end was quite a mess! Particularly proud of my pallet board fence.

Hope this makes you smile...cos it does me!
