Brrrrrrr

Assssssss monkey weather! Well.....May be exaggerating a little!

Greetings.

My sincere apologies for neglecting you Follower. But to be fair.....and honest...not much left to say for this season. Just a few peppers and chillies left. One or two cabbages......and that's it!

Happened upon our local show at the RJHS....and my what a little revelation ! Had I but known I would have entered my rhubarb! But what a show....cattle and calves, chickens, giant rabbits and hares and various other furries and a whole array of little birdies and chickens. Also plenty of fruit and veg.  Well impressed. In fact so impressed that Pip and me are joining up to compete next year.

Chutney!......not a swear word but an afternoon of fun and wine! Resulting in jars of the stuff. Fab!

After two days the weedpile is still burning! Quite amazed considering we've had rain and the courgettes weren't dried out.

A little pick from my friend Graham whose just dug up all his strawberries......a new strawberry patch! Delighted.

Put in my leeks which were languishing in a pot. I lost them last year by not putting them out.  They're in now but out late so will have to hope.

Burn!

Greetings.

Well my huge weedpile has been burnt to a crisp. Had an absolutely fabby sunny day on the Plot burning my pile and generally tinkering about and tidying up the toms.

The never ending courgettes have eventually come to an end and having pulled them up ....have created a new pile!

Had a bit of a downpour this morning early which has settled the dust . First rain in absolutely ages.

Hope you enjoyed the pics! More to come.

Still Sunny! But on the downside....not much water and so growing conditions not as brill as they should have been. Need to get me some more water butts. Note to self....Butts!

Gotta huge weed pile #2. Spread the original out...and found a huge slow worm inside which made off.  Not much left on the plot.....but toms and chillies aplenty and lots of peppers.

Plot is looking quite tidy as opposed to a weed jungle!

Still trying to upload pics.......

Weeding along.

Greetings.
Well it's been a while ....so I thought I'd better had! And what with my Sis being over from Germany to give me a hand it was rude not to.

So we've done about half the Plot and now really I must find some stuff to put in it cos the weather is still relatively beautiful and it seems such a waste not to.

In the meantime I've harvested yet more courgettes. Tomatoes in full swing. Purple beans. Yellow carrots. Maris Pipers. And my first Savoy cabbage....and its huge! and just like the ones you get in the shops! Oh and flowers too.

There's been a few disappointments along the way...cucamellons fried in the greenhouse......beets didn't flourish.....runner beans very poor.....onions a disaster.....giant pumpkin...well le't not mention that!.......glads.....caulies.

On the upside I'm going Blackberrying! There's going to be loads this year. And have I mentioned my new Herb Planter? and the four Mackerel I caught off my Pier? and my new Kenwood I got for a song?....been making Ice cream ( raspberry and now rhubarb and custard with ginger snaps) Fab! And my breadmaking efforts are getting better and better.

I wanted to post a coupple of pics but cant seem to upload any....sorry!

Very zingy....made me produce a bucket of saliva(not too nice) but the after glow was quite pleasant. Gonna have great fun with these beauties!

A little bonus....the empty plot next to Pips has gone all wild....and there is a fabby blackberry bush just coming into fruit and with loads to come. So long as I can keep it a secret I'll be very happy.

Purple sporuting....sprouting!

All growing on the garden front despite very little rain of late. Had my first few strawberries. Broads nearly croppable and peas podding up nicely.  Still harvesting rhubarb.Courgettes looking good.
Just strung the toms which are flowering already. Talking of flowers my spuds are too so they won't be long now.

Pip has segregated the chickens as we think the big girls have been picking on Dianna a bit much.  Looking to get a separate run for them. And  we got 6 eggs the other day! Wow!.

Trooping of the Colour the other day. Makes one proud to be British!

New Arrivals!

Gretings.

Very eggcited. Geddit? Our new Ladies are Light Sussex but there's nothing light about them. No offence Ladies but they are three times the size of our current crew. On introduction to the old mob there was a little feistyness from Speckles ( fair play she was here first) but she was firmly put in her place by the new arrivals. A visit this afternoon after 24 hours and all is calm with 3 from the old crew and two from the new three. Judging by the debris inside there was probably a bit more "sorting out" done behind closed doors.Nuff said!
And here they are......
The Old Crew (minus Di who's gone broody)

And The Rolly Polly's!

Funnilly enough the fence behind it is...knackered! Resulting in visit from two nice Fencing Men. I have given up bodging and have gone for professional help. Sunday 19 May 2013

Drab....

Greetings.

Drab...a new shade of Grey!

The only good thing about rain is that it makes the ground wet. And wet ground is excellent for planting green things. Not quite sure exactly what the green things are ...I think they are of the cabbage plant family but could be brocolli or cauli or summit. Anyway we'll find out in due course.

A few carrots from Pip....mine aren't showing yet. Parsnips are up though. Raspberries and strabs looking good.

I also planted out my flowers so should have a good show later. Delphs just begining to push through. Glads well on the way. All my Icebergs are out so I have not a lot left in the greenhouse.

Talking of which toms almost ready to put in. Cucamellons struggling along as are the chillies and peppers. I'm not much good with them so again we'll see what we shall see.

Weed pile central has grown! Gotta get rid as Beehive Plan needs to get going. Once we are "on the way " financially the Shallotment will take on a whole new slant. Keep watching this space.

Sorry I kinda fooled you with the recent Treat. New pisc to follow soon.

Are you watching The Following?....Scarey! I have Followers....and the thing is I only know from which country they come. Malaysia! Hello Follower! Interesting.

Now then....sorry, but not a lot to report at the begining ao the week. Cropped 6lbs of rhubarb. Bit of watering....the usual. It rained a bit last night so was interested to see how much I'd captured in new bin setup..... needles to say the bloomin' bin had shifted and I got not a drop! Narked!

Ladies are back on form and production is back to 4 per day. Whoop!

You've got to love it!

Abitot.

Sunday 12 May 2013

Barrowing....

....along.

Greetings.

Well not really....just potted on some more lettuces and put them on my new patio.  Rigged up a downpipe from the front shed gutter and placed the now empty bin underneath just in case we get some rain. I reckon I'm doing 10 lts a day watering. Thats 70 a week. I only had 700 lts to begin with......I can't do the math but it means water is going fast!...and it's not being refilled. I may have to resort to filling up at home again. God I hope not.

The bin had been full of manure and various bits and pieces. It seems to have rotted down nicely so I emptied it on the plot to replace lost soil. Seems to have filled a hole. Smells a bit though!

A bit more digging...although I now use my dad's old hoe thing...it's brilliant. It's like a mini mattock. I think I have about 2% of Plot space left....excluding the weed pile....to go.

Keep on Keeping On.

Slabtastic!

Geetings.

Great pick from Pat, bloke from work, a shed load of slabs....well about 60 actually. And a little wheelbarrow....and two spades...and two forks.....and a rake.....and a hedgetrimmer! A few bottles of vino in exchange. Fantastic!

So what have I done with them all? Well I've put them to good use tidying up the nettle patch in front of the shed....and I was able to use half the weed pile infilling. I've also finished slabbing in front of the greenhouse....ok so it's not perfectly alligned or indeed flat exactly....it's an allotment for God's sake not Chelsea! Anyway it's 100% better than before.

Have I mentioned....courgettes out, more beets out, dwarf French beans out and a load more Icebergs out? Well they are together with a fine row of Hollyhocks.Fab.

Weed pile ....diminishing. Fab.

In the greenhouse...more potting on. Cucamellons and asparagus. Toms are coming along and my giant pumpkins which I'm a little frightened of putting out as A) I dont have much room left and B) refer to A.

A bit breezy at the mo but dry (apart from a little rain overnight) and overall quite nice. A bit concerned as my water tank is emptying rapidly! Looking for a new watter butt.....

Rhubarb....'nuff said.

Ladies back on....up to 3 a day...just need one more. Reprieve!

Enjoying Keeping On.

It's  a very special day here in Jersey and the sun is beating down!

Lots planted out - more beans, beets and lettuce. More clearing ready for courgettes and pumpkins. The spuds are showing and now I wish I'd planted earlier as my 'lotment neighbour is digging his.

Don't know whats going on with the ladies....laying has gone down to one a day. Oh dear!

I have another day off tomorrow...then two days on the van up the horses. I'm going to plant out my flowers. Don't expect much this year ...we'll see.

No need to mention rhubarb.....superb. Onions....doing their thing. Raspberries looking good...strawberries...flowering.

Treats!

Greetings.

Well the Weatherman got it totally wrong! He said it was going to get cold and drizzly. Well I tell you Sir it's been beatiful! Yes Indeedy!

Out and about again and more potting on...there is another term for it but I think it's a bit rude....you know what I mean! And some more diggin cos I love it so much. And a bit of weedin around my 300...which as I've probably said before are now about 70. Weed pile is now tidier but still huge. It is sorta turning into compost....I may just let it do just that!

Now then here's your promised treat......
Kindly note ..I have cleared pile of weeds from the middle of the path. A new addition for 2013...Bob's Bamboo Bean Arbour...Narce! Also  Bob's Bean Trellis! Rhubarb....Stunning!

And a view from the bottom! The Greater Weedpile bottom left. I gave in and put in a load of spuds...well you got to Bi Cri! they're on the left and on the right from the top...strawberries, broad beans, peas, then rows of carrots, beets , parsnips etc.

and the Greenhouse of course. Lots and lots going on in here.

Well I hope you continue to enjoy!

Super sunny!

Geetings.

Lots going on. More ....either sweed, beets or turnips (dont know what they are)...out.  Seeds sprouting.  Some  other green things ...out.  Bit of a theme going on here....nothing labeled!

Bit more digging done.

Still lots more to do though and now the battle to keep the weeds at bay. The plan is to keep hoeing before anything develops. Whether I can keep to the plan is another matter!

The Ladies are still being brilliant! 4 a day like clockwork.

Oh did I mention that today is Sunny? No?....well it is! Lovin it.

About to hit the Season for the Van. 3 day Boatshow and the Horses  next weekend and then 4 days of Horses for Liberation. Just going to pray for good weather. Busy busy.

Now I don't really care if you do or not as it's not really going to change my life but it's just nice to know that there's life out there.

Now then....rant over....onto the Plot. All great! Things are shooting along...I swear that my lettuces have doubled in size overnight. Stroll on! Still getting the odd snail in ...where do they come from?

Stuff is basically growing. Marvelous! All my pumpkins are up...a bit worried that they'll take over when they get going....I think I might plant a few in Pips without him seeing.! Heehee!

On the Plot.....parsnips, turnips, sweeds, chard....in.

Peas and beans looking good. 300 looking like 100 though :(

In the greenhouse almost everything up now and apart from the odd nibbled cabbage I'm quite happy.

Weekend!

Greetings.
Well it's been a fabby week what with it being my birthday an all. Received some lovely presents...a book about chickens, a garden voucher and a book about old agricultural machines......some really good looking Fergies to get you going!
The ladies are coming along great....we've had a 4 3 4 Wed Thurs Fri! I've sold my first half dozen too.
The rain however is stalling my outdoor sowing! Darn it! Indoors I've been thinning out lettuce and potting on various flowers and cabbages and the like.  Chillies are coming through and beets doing well. Just need a bit more SUN now...please....thank you very much.

Was hoping to move the muck heap today....but it doesn't look like that's going to happen!

 Come on! It's so frustrating!!!!!!

Here's hoping Sunday will be better.

Keep on trying to keep on!

Grand Day!

Greetings.

What a lovely day! A bit of rain last night and a super sunny day.

Went up the Plot....did a bit of Arbour improving....followed by a bit of potting on and more sowing....beets (the ones that look like sweets) and purple sprouting. Very theraputic potting on.

Keep on enjoying!

Brilliant!

Greetings.

Have we reached a turning point? Has Summer arrived? We Bloomin well hope so and if this weekend is anything to go by it has! Brilliant and Glorious!
Well I was working the Van on Saturday  and today I had a few fab hours on the Plot. And yes the dream has come true and I have a very fine Bamboo Bean Arbour! With some laughing and shaking of heads from the neighbours I think I have done  a very fine job.

Did a little trading and got me a lawnmower for twenty squids. I've done the lawn..... and fine though it is  the mower is only good for a person of short stature! On the upside  it handles like a hoover and can be used one handed! So the Home Garden has had its first  brush upand looking good it is too!

Girls are wonderful!

Summer....

it's Official!

Greetings.

Well of course it is after all "Spring Forward" into SUMMER! There's not a cloud in the sky....the big yellow thing is visible.....yet it's bloomin freezing! Doesn't stop the greenhouse needing a watering...and the birds a feeding. Oh the joys of Allotment Life.

I've had an idea.... not a big one or even an earthshattering one.... but just a little one. I think I'm going to make me a little walkway archway down the middle of the plot with some of the big bamboo I cut. I can grow my beans up it and line the edges with all the hollyhocks and lupins and things. Narce! Might even have space for some veggies! It'll be great for the bees...when I eventually get round to it. What with the Glads and Daliahs already in we're going to look like Chelsea!

I love Summer!

Keep on Enjoying.

Plotovision!

My nicely dug plot. Rhubarb on the right. The 300 down at the bottom. Weed pile...needs seiving and clearing. Offers?

In the greenhouse some of my trays.

Broad beans.

The Supremes!

Only managed to get three out of the four.....they don't stand still for long!

Bank Holliday Monday

Greetings
Hope you all had a lovely Easter. We had 12 for lunch and did....have a lovely day.
Well well well....the weather is bloomin lovely too! A bit breezy but in the greenhouse it's like a Summers day. Talking of which I've had a jolly good time in there too. All cleaned out and Bristol fashion. Loads more sowed....courgettes more beans and peas, toms and cucumbers. I now have 18 trays of stuff to water and look after. Oh and some pots of spring onions and leeks and some fresias on the go as well. Plot tilled over some more ....still a little reticent to sow out yet. Spoke to The Plots, Dave and Liz, not their real name...long story...but they have convinced me to do some spuds. I know I swore I wouldn't plant any more  but hey I'm a gardner and mustn't be put off be a little set back.  Gotta source me some Royals eh!

The Girls are looking good. Another egg today so we seem to be averaging one a day...not brilliant but good enough. Snail hunting is a full time hobby now as we know how much they like them. They are very pretty. ( My God !  what am I saying....chickens!)Photos very soon.

Graham came round with some raspberry canes...Brill!

So it's all good!

Keep on enjoying!

Good Friday...

Greetings!

Yes its Easter weekend. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday off. Pip is off down to his house in the South of France and 20 degrees of sun.....jealous? Ruddy right I am as we all freeze here. Having said that it's not been so bad. Cold yes but there's been some sun and no rain ....thank God.

The girls seem to be settling in....we've had a dozen or so eggs which is pretty good considering. They love snails....cant find enough of them. One chook is really quite friendly. The others are still a bit standoffish...but what the hell...they're chickens!

On the Plot front...rhubarb comming along nicely and onions are...well...onions.

In the greenhouse...peas and broad beans doing well. Leuttce , cabbage, sprouts, beets, flowers all comming up.

I put in two trays of dwarf and french beans some caullies and cucamellons and a coupple of other bits and pieces. It's all still a bit cold and so I'm not sowing outdoors yet. The season is obviously going to be very late this year and so I think it's wise to wait.

Keep on keeping on!

Well what can I say....brilliant day Saturday. The girl's accomodation is finished. 5*. Check out Trip Advisor as I suspect our location is the place to be.

In the greenhouse things are sprouting aplenty and looking good.

Weather a bit wierd though.....Saturday we had rolling sea mist interspersed with sun. And we have 5 -10 cm of snow predicted for Monday! Blimy!

I just hope the 300 survive this last thrust of Winter. The rhubarb is quite advanced too so fingers crossed.

Keep on keeping on.

Sunday....

.....Sunniness!

Greetings.

Jane...bless her, said I didn't have to do the Van today so I've been helping Pip  with the construction of the Run. So far so good....much digging, sawing, hammering and drilling etc. Looking good. Another weekends work or two and we'll be ready for the girls. So excited.

And when I've got a moment more sowing to be done.....

And the Sun came out today and I saw two huge eagle birds too!

Herman the German Cake....a gift from a friend....Mk 2 is brewing nicely. It's a sour dough mix and takes 10 days to ...mature. Really nice when done as you mix in apple, raisins and cinnamon. Fab.

That's about all for now folks....

Spring....

...Chickens!

Greetings!

Well not much happening in general but great to report almost a whole dry week. Hardly blazing sunshine - overcast and cold - but it's a  start!. And  Eve is home for the weekend .

On the chicken front we are forging ahead...at least Pip is as it seems he has done most of the work. But I am chief supplier of goods - hen shed / appartment and fencing so I don't feel too guilty.

Did a little light bamboo cropping with the intention of selling a bit but the man wants to use it for some shower screen for a client....sounds all a bit far fetched myself so he's taken some to show his client. We shall wait and see. He seems keen though.

Farmers are forging ahead with the spud planting. Very late for Jersey but I suppose it's the same everywhere...hopefully. No spuds this year for me...don't want to be disappointed again.

Raided the old Colombier at dad's ...dont tell...and got me two great hoe / mattock things. One has  a small pick and spade  type end and the other has a small circular blade and a two prong fork. Brill.

Well well...been quite busy after all! and a day on the van at the Horses tomorrow. Joy.

Keep on.......

Superb...

Sunshine.
Greetings.

It's been brilliant all week! Not a drop has been spilt!

Sowing going on.....a bunch of asters, hollyhocks delphiniums and something else which eludes me at the mo. And on the veg front...icebergs ahead...beetroot....cabbage and sprouts (yep have to go in now) and a load of different chillies...see what happens this year. Lots of packets that say I can sow direct out...you know parsnips...carrots etc etc but I'm going to leave them for another coupple of weeks as it's still cold . All in all ....fabby.

Have I mentioned free chicken run?  been collected and now powerwashed and all spick and span ready for some girls....although the nesting box bit needs a bit of gentle repair.  Hope I'm not repeating myself...repeating myself.

On the inside...kitchen finished....almost....am changing the downlighters and having all sorts of trouble with the dimmer switch...Grrr!

Keep on keeping on!

Whoop de woo! A brilliantly sunny day. And you know what that means.....out and aboutness. Yes indeedy. Although I started by putting another coat on the kitchen and fitting new downlights. Then I went and got some cheapy 2nd hand ones for the extension pert of the kitchen.... and then I went out!
In the greenhouse almost all my peas are up and doing fine. And it was hot! It's begining to feel a lot like Spring. A bit more digging done. So glad I have a slight slope as no standing water but the ground is well......satutrated. Water butt nearly full though...just in case we have a sudden drought.
I think  two more weeks before the main sow....whadya think? Good to grow.

Keep on doing what we all like doing!

Rhubarb comming along ......onions too!  No diggin tho!....so I went and painted the kitchen instead.

Incredible...

....day today!

Greetings

I forgive you USA!.......It hasn't rained all day! And what a day it's been. Girls out at the Dog Show and both out tomorrow so I've been giving #2 van a good going over in readiness for the rugby. (Talking of which...well done Ireland and better luck next time Wales)

This afternoon a visit to th Plot and a good load of digging done. I'd say a good 2/3rds of the plot dug. Of the remaining 1/3rd, 2/3rds are devoted to the 300 ( which, by the way, are, I'm very glad to say, doing fine)  and the remaining 1/3rd needs digging. So all in all not far to go!

My rhubarb is coming through nicely and the peas I put in a little while ago are begining to show. Great!

A little more digging and some tidying up and I'll be ready for action!
And guess what?....our neighbour says it's ok to keep chickens! Pip and me are overjoyed as Pip has a perfect patch at the back of his plot. Gotta get building.

A little bit of good weather makes all the difference. And I must say I'm delighted that it really hasn't made much difference to the Plot...no flooding but nice and soft. Brill!

Hope you've all been getting out and about....gotta do it while it lasts!

Yeeha! Bright light and no rain and blue skies and all things good! We in Europe are just so happy right now....it feels like the clouds of Despair have lifted.  I was on the verge of sueing the USA as I kinda beleive all the crap weather has been due to them as the Jet Stream belongs to America. Apologies if it isn't....and I am only joking!

Back from Venice...had a fabby time...it was sunny there too!....but very cold. Saw lots of stuff and did Italian type things!

Hope to get up the Plot this Saturday and see whats happening.

Greetings.

World Weather! What is going on? Floods in the East, Fires in Australia, Snow in the UK and Rain in Jersey. I will not mention my onions again.

FYI...Elephants Breath by F & B..... A...maze...ing! I've slapped some slop onto my walls over the years but this is by far the most pleasurable stuff to use by far. And it looks quite good too. I won't harp on .....

Having Bridge Friends tomorrow night....dinner then cards....not earth shattering....just thought I'd mention it as I'll be making a rhubarb crumble sourced from you know where.

Got a jar of Plum chutney off my mate Steve. I'm trading half a pumpkin for it. I like bartering. It gells so well with Allotment life.

Sunday 20 January 2013

That's all.....

.....for this weekend.

Greetings.

Well, our staycation has been.....epic! Not really. It's been pretty much like any other but with snow and looking out of my window now ...no snow. Put it to good use though and have redecorated the downstaits privy and purchased paint for the kitchen. Paint for that is still in the tin as I have run out of steam. I may put my mind to it during the week. And it's not just any old paint....oh no. It is Farrow and Ball  "Elephant's Breath" posh stuff and at £65 it had better be!

Now..onto the business of gardening!.....or lack of it. As we all know not a lot happens in January unless you live in Asia or somewhere nice an' Tropical! I have a copy of Allotment month by month by Alan Buckingham. It's dead good for a rank amateur like me and funnilly enough takes you through each month step by step. It's my Bible. This month it tells you to chill, relax and sleep. Only joking. There's still plenty to do....mostly shoveling muck and the like. Got me some more seeds.... broad beans (which I'd forgotton to order) and some golden beetroot. Narce!

Fingers crossed that all will be OK for next Friday!

Thanks......

...for breaking 1000 pageviews!

Greetings again.

Obviously the Snow has caused everyone to stay in and become increasingly bored...although a showing of The Colditz Story always whiles away an hour or so. In the meantime you've all been busy visiting the old Blog. I thank you.

Still pretty snowy out although I detect a bit of defrosting going on. So we are enjoying our staycation...a holiday at home. Starting with a lovely bacon and egg roll with a Baileys or two on the side....well we are on holiday! Decided not to get slaughtered but to hunker down instead. Perhaps might go up The Dolphin for our tea.....depending on outside mean temp.

Good news....a new old Hoe has been delivered! Have yet to see it but my friend Liz ordered it during an evening's ramblings so am waiting in eager anticipation......woohoo!

Going a bit stir crazy...not being able to get out on the Plot!

Extraordinarily.....

SUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings.

You just don't know how happy I am! It has been sunny all day and even with a banging hangover it's been brilliant.

I've finished moving the muck pile onto the plot and have been digging in all day. Muck pile area now has  a more substantial retaining board to keep the pile off the side of the greenhouse and is now ready ro receive yet more muck. It's like the Circle of  Life.

The Plot is now almost 1/3rd dug. The 300 (onions) are doing fine down the bottom end and my rhubarb is showing. I gave them a layer of muck so hopefully the'll do ok.

No joke...last three tomatoes from the greenhouse. All done now and so it starts again. My neighbour Pip has already sowed broad beans and peas and has even put his beans out. A little early methinks as cold is forecast but snooze you loose. So I have sowed too. Peas to start. But I will be doing as last year and sowing the month before the packet says. After all we are Jersey and we are sub-tropical!

Looking forward to tomorrow ...so I can continue doing it all again!

Hope you've all been out and about too.

Vantastic!

Greetings.

Well I thought I'd be digging today and I'll tell you for why I haven't been. Our daughter was supposed to be helping out on our Van but guess what ....when one goes out in one's Little Red Dress on one's last weekend in Jersey before going back to Uni.....there's no chance in Hell that one would be able to get up early enough  to be of any use! And sure enough.......

And as luck would have it it's also been a regularly damp day with thick fog and general murkiness.

Now then Shallotment Followeres...we have had over 930 page hits since I started this thing...I'm quite stunned! I like to think that all have been genuinely dedicated followers of Shallotment Life but I suspect that the odd Visitor has been accidental....nevertheless a hit is a hit!
